Workshop on Prevention of Hazardous Cleaning of Sewers and Septic Tanks in Urban Towns / Cities of West Bengal
This One Day Workshop is organized as part of the yearlong celebration of 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Initiated By: Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India.
Supported By: National SafaiKarmachari Finance and Development Corporation & Skill Council for Green Jobs.
Topics which were covered in the Workshop –
- Manual Scavenging and Hazardous Cleaning in India.
- Legal provisions for the welfare of Manual Scavengers
- Protective gear and safety devices to be used for manual cleaning of Sewer and Septic Tank
- Important duties of the Employer.
- Introduction to Machines for Cleaning of Sewer Lines & Septic Tanks.
- Schemes for rehabilitation of manual scavengers
Outcome of the Workshop:
- Manual Scavenging is legally banned in all Municipalities but the conservancy workers do not use proper safety measures.
- Everyone accepted the Importance of First Aid Box.
- Role of the Employers at the time of cleaning is accepted by all.
- Municipalities and Corporations have said that they will introduce the modern and more scientific safety gears in upcoming days.
